Urethanes The origin of the Farathane name is derived from combining 19th century British inventor Michael Faraday’s name with "urethane," hence: "Farathane." We are proud of the technological capabilities, which we have achieved by the use of specialized urethane materials in many of the product applications we have developed. USF currently formulates four series of TPU’s: 100 Series – Polyether 200 Series – Polyester 300 Series – Polycaprolactone 400 Series – High performance - The custom blended urethanes of USF have received materials approval at Ford, GM and Chrysler.
- Hardness for all of the USF generated urethanes range from a low of 31 Shore D to a high of 70 Shore D Durometer.
- USF Blended urethanes can be formulated to include glass reinforcement, lubricants and other additives.
USF’s Thermo-plastic Urethanes are characterized by the following properties: - High Tensile and Tear Strength
- Excellent Abrasion Resistance
- Excellent Resistance to Fuels, Oils, Ozone and Oxygen
- High Elasticity and Resilience
- High Load Bearing Capacity and Hardness
- High Impact Resistance and Vibration Dampening Properties
- Excellent Low Temperature Properties
- Reprocessible
- Superior Dynamic Properties (minimum heat build-up)
- Outstanding Resistance to Hydrolytic Degradation
TPU Product Range: Property – Units Range Hardness (Shore) 75A – 75D Tensile Strength psi 3 - 8,000 Elongation % 100 – 700 Tear Strength n/mm 25 – 260 Bayshore Rebound % 20 – 80 Advantage of High Performance Urethanes: - Performs at temperatures of 50˚ to 75˚ C (122˚ - 167˚F) – Higher than conventional urethanes.
- Strength, elongation and compression set resistance are better than most urethanes.
- Resistance to oils, abrasion and chemicals are excellent.
- Material is available in 35 to 65 Shore D hardness range.
- As with all USF Urethanes, formulations can be modified to meet specific application requirements.
Bayer/Mays Agreement - In February 2000, US Farathane entered into an agreement with Bayer Corporation to toll manufacture our proprietary thermoplastics polyurethane (TPU) formulations. US Farathane has been manufacturing urethane for the past 26 years and has over 28 different base formulations. Each of these formulations can be compounded with additives to customize the formulation to meet specific performance requirements. In March 2001, after several months of developmental work, USF began receiving four of its custom formulations from Bayer AG’s Dormagen, Germany facility. These four formulations account for 67% of USF’s TPU production. Bayer is currently in the process of developing three additional USF material formulations as well as several compounded grades. Bayer’s state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and vast laboratory resources allow for more consistent material processing and continued property improvement and development. US Farathane’s relationship with Bayer is further enhanced by the material distribution agreement with Mays Chemical Corporation. Mays Chemical is a fully integrated, minority-owned chemical distributor. |
